http://www.washingtontimes.com/culture/military-history/ Webb tries to protect Civil War battlefields Joseph Weber UPDATED: Sen. Jim Webb, Virginia Democrat, outlined legislation Wednesday that would preserve 7,200 acres around the Petersburg National Battlefield in Virginia, which would make it the largest Civil War park in the country. The Petersburg National Boundary Modification Act would give the National Park Service authority to acquire the land, 12 surrounding battlefields, which Mr. Webb says have been targeted for commercial and residential development. Petersburg saw nearly one quarter of the Civil War fought in its surrounding area, and the preservation of these battlefields is important for future generations to understand and appreciate the significance of our nation's history, Mr. Webb. Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, and this legislation serves as an appropriate and timely means to commemorate this significant historical event. Petersburg is the site of the longest battle in U.S. history. In the summer of 1864, Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant surrounded Petersburg

This is unique land, he said, not just acreage. Good post.  I intend to follow up. Civil war battlefield real estate is not sacred.   I don't think the ACW has much to teach us today. War causes a lot of damage? Governments rest on the war power? It's hard to make big social changes? People try to hold on to the basis of their wealth and power? Central governments resist division? Does anybody above the age of ten not know these already? If what is desired is to glorify the victors (or defeated), I suggest that those wanting to do this hold banquets with appropriate speeches.  But since few are willing to take time out for this, they propose that real estate is sacred, and that the government should pay for setting it aside. Humbug. Hugh

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate
